Insect flight

We are currently extending the use of our PIV system to the study of flying insects. The European hummingbird hawkmoth Macroglossum stellatarum is an excellent study species in the wind tunnel as it is relatively large and easily attracted to an artificial feeder. We will compare the wakes shed during flights at a range of flight speeds to the wakes of other flying animals.
