Degree projects

You are welcome to carry out your degree project in our group. We have several undergraduate research projects available. For further information please contact Jure Piskur, by e-mail Jure.Piskur@biol.lu.se, by phone 046-222 83 73 or just visit Jure in the Biology Building A, Sölvegatan 35, bottom floor.

We have three suggested subjects for a Degree Project, that is "Examensarbete":The subjects are:

Experimental evolution of pathogenic yeast Candida glabrata

The main purpose of the project is an experimental approval that the C. glabrata genome flexibility is connected with the development of novel phenotypes.

Molecular biology and genetics of non-conventional yeasts

In this project you will help to develop Dekkera/Brettanomyces into laboratory organisms, thus providing the background for future experiments. Possible aims for the project could be to:

  1. Develop a mutagenesis technique for isolation of auxotrophic mutants.
  2. Test if various strains can mate or develop a protoplast fusion method.
  3. Develop a strain, which could be employed for the genome sequencing.
  4. Prepare strains, which could be studied under controlled conditions in a fermentor.
  5. Isolate and characterize mitochondrial DNA and study the nature of the petite-mutants.
  6. Study genome and chromosome stability.
  7. Develop transformation system.
  8. Develop a model to describe the evolutionary history of this yeast.

Birth of new genes through duplications: analysis of genes and enzymes involved in metabolism of nucleic acids precursors

In this project you will identify novel genes in a variety of organisms, subclone them into expression vectors, overexpress and purify the recombinant enzymes, study their substrate specificity and kinetic parameters, study their structure-function relationship and try to understand the evolutionary history of the enzymes. You will learn and employ a variety of molecular biology, biochemistry and genetics techniques.
