
As far back as I was a little child I was fascinated by the nature, so I was sure of studying Biology after schooltime. For my diploma thesis I worked with the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum at the Berhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, Germany. Here in Lund I work within the EU-Cornucopia project with a focus on Dekkera/ Brettanomyces yeasts, which have an interesting aroma potential for the wine industry but are so far only poorly studied in the laboratory.
Yeasts are indispensable in a lot of fields all over the world, without their work we could not enjoy beer, wine or bread. Less than one tenth of yeasts are known, which means there are a lot of yeast species that can help to understand the evolution, that represent new tools to produce desirable sensory results. Non-conventional yeast strains could provide extraordinary capacities and can be used e.g. in health care or food industry.

Currently I focus on development of molecular genetic tools for Dekkera strains, especially the development of RNAi constructs. These could help to identify genes behind some of the interesting properties of these yeasts, e.g. genes that determine and influence aromas.
I hope to be a part of the detection of non-conventional yeast strains that provide extraordinary capacities. For this I will cooperate with labs all over the world to get the best possible results.
