History
The Malmö Music Conservatory, the predecessor of the Malmö Academy of Music, commenced musical education in 1907 at the initiative of the Italian Giovanni Tronchi who was also the first director of the school.
The school become a state educational institution in 1971 and changed its name to the Malmö Academy of Music.
In 1977 it became a part of Lund University and since 1995 the Malmö Academy of Music, the Malmö Theatre Academy and the Malmö Academy of Fine Arts have together constituted the Malmö Academies of Fine and Performing Arts, one of the nine areas of activities within Lund University.
The Academy today has professors in piano, guitar, violin, violoncello, trumpet, woodwind, organ, composition, music education, eurhythmics and interpretation studies. This has led to artistic development work – the artistic equivalent to research, playing a central role at the Academy.
The Academy has approximately 600 students and a 200 member strong teaching staff.
Håkan Lundström’s Book Musikhögskolan i Malmö – hundra år av musikutbildning (The Malmö Academy of Music – 100 years of Education in Music) was published in 2007 in association with the 100 year anniversary of the Academy.
The book is an exposé of the Academy’s first 100 years and describes the multi-faceted efforts made by the school to educate young people in music. It is about sacrifice and constantly striving to ensure an even better future for music learning. The book is 110 pages long and is richly illustrated with photos from each era. It is available free of charge and can be ordered from the reception of the Academy.
