Ewa Bukowska

I am a graduate from University of Gdansk, Poland, with a Master's degree in Microbiology. My interest in molecular microbiology and willingness to stay in academia motivated me to pursue a PhD. In 2010, I started to work on my doctoral project dealing with the peptidoglycan synthesis and endospore biogenesis.

Endospores, which can be formed by some bacteria, are resistant to heat, chemicals, radiation and dehydration that normally kills vegetative cells. The penicillin-binding protein SpoVD in Bacillus subtilis is essential for the synthesis of the endospore cortex, a protective layer consisting of peptidoglycan. The project aims to elucidate the molecular function of SpoVD and to better understand peptidoglycan biogenesis. The research topic is of considerable medicinal interest because peptidoglycan synthesis is an effective target for several classes of known antibiotics and eventual new drugs.
