The organisation of postgraduate studies at Lund University is
decentralised to the departmental level. The Head of the Department
(prefekt) is ultimately responsible for postgraduate studies, including
the admission of new postgraduate students.

Postgraduate students receive individual tutoring and are engaged both in a research assignment and in theoretical studies in the form of seminars or courses. The research assignment is intended to result in a scientific thesis, and the work of writing the thesis occupies most of the student’s time. The student concludes research training with a thesis that is defended publicly.
The dissertation is a result of 2-3 years of research, the remaining 1-2
years is intended for courses, seminars, excursions etc. The
dissertation normally takes the form of a comprehensive summary based on
a collection of articles. The articles may have been written by the
student alone, or in cooperation with other people. In exceptional cases
the thesis may be in the form of a monograph written on a subject with
one main title. The thesis should be in a form according with
international practice for the presentation of scientific results and
should fulfil the demands of publication in peer-reviewed scientific
journals of international standard.
