This study traces the history of publishers' clothbindings in Sweden, and places them in relation to the emergence of modernity. The interaction between technology, economics and aesthetics is central to the analysis, in which a sociological approach is combined with perspectives of bookhistory and material culture studies. Bookbindings mirror society and they are an integrated part of the book.
