Docent lecture in Biology by Glenn Svensson
Popular lecture entitled "The life of Charles Valentine Riley and his discovery of active pollination" Abstract: Charles Valentine Riley (1843-1895) was one of the pioneers in basic and applied entomology. Among many things, he helped the California citrus industry to combat scale insects by introducing the vedalia beetle, and he was a key figure in the rescue of the French wine industry from the Phylloxera aphid. In addition, he was involved in the discovery of the yucca – yucca-moth mutualism, and later the main explorer of this unique insect-plant interaction, which is today used as a classic example of coevolution, and which Darwin considered “the most remarkable fertilization system ever described”. I will outline the life of CV Riley, and his contribution to the field of entomology in general, and the yucca – yucca-moth interaction in particular
