Lena Ekman Frisk earned her undergraduate degree in music education at the Malmö Academy of Music (GG major; second study eurythmics) in 1985. Further studies include choral singing /choral conducting /methodology, symphony orchestra, jazz improvisation and eutony. In 1993, Ms. Ekman Frisk received her master’s degree in choral conducting at the Malmö Academy of Music.
Lena Ekman Frisk has an extensive professional experience, including appointments at Malmö municipal music school (1985–1990), Höör municipal music school (1990–1996), music classes at Berga High School in Eslöv (1993–1994), Kristianstad magnet school music profiled classes at Fröknegård School, Kristianstad (1996–2008 ), and other primary and secondary schools, leading choirs, teaching the recorder and djembe; eurythmics, drama, dance, ear training, vocal training and music theory. These engagements have included various projects, such as musicals (Elddonet, Rävjakten, Noas flod [Tinder-Box, Fox Chase, Noah’s Flood]), and traditional Lucia and Spring concerts.
1983–1997 Ms. Ekman Frisk was Conductor of Husets Kör (House Choir), Malmö, in addition to several assignments with free music groups: Varieté Vauduvill, Nema Problema, Ensemble Latino and Okonkolo; and such artists/tutors as Sten Källman, Daniel Helldén, Kerstin Linzander, Mikael Wiehe and Marit Selfjord. Other notable conducting engagements include Lund Academic Choir (1993–94), with a Christmas concert tour featuring F. Poulenc and A. Öhrwall’s Gaudete; and a Spring concert with pianist Stina Backlund.
Ms. Ekman Frisk is also engaged in regular summer courses for choral singers, organised by Föreningen Music Weeks in Sweden (Music Weeks in Sweden Society), every time featuring a major choral work, e.g. Monteverdi’s Vespers of the Blessed Virgin, Haydn’s The Creation, Kodaly’s Missa Brevis, Mozart’s Requiem and Britten’s S:t Nicholas. Ms. Ekman Frisk conducts the children’s chorus and youth choir and directs the vocal training and warm-up of the adult choir.
From 2003, she also holds the position of conductor of Christianstad Motet Choir. Several productions have taken place together with Christianstad’s Symphony Orchestra, such as Orff’s Carmina Burana and Rutter’s Magnificat. Spring 2008, the Motet Choir performed Lindberg’s Requiem, a mass in a mixed jazz and folklore style. Monday Night Big Band played in this performance and Lena Willemark was one of the soloists. Christianstad’s Motet Choir competed november 2007 in Warszaw International Choral Competition, where they received a first place in their category; mixed, adult choruses.
Academic year 2005-2006 she made a faculty exchange with Dr. Mark Munson, American choral director and university teacher. During this year, she taught choral conducting, methods and repertoire at College of Musical Arts, Bowling Green State University, Ohio, U.S.A. She also conducted The University Womens Chorus.
Since 2000, Ms. Ekman Frisk teaches choral singing, methods, conducting and repertoire at the Malmö Academy of Music.
In July, 2008, she started her part time work as a producer/coordinator within Körcentrum Syd, Southern Choral Centre. Souhern Choral Centre is a cooperation between several distinguished music and educational institutions and the common goal is to stimulate choral activities and choral education in the southernmost part of Sweden.
