Hans Pålsson

Professor of Piano

Hans Pålsson, one of Sweden’s foremost concert pianists and tutor of a new pianist generation, is already a legend in the Baltic countries. In an age of narrow specialism, he is noted for his wide range; from Bach through the Romantics to the 20th century and down to the present.

Born in Helsingborg in 1949, Mr. Pålsson studied with Robert Riefling in Copenhagen and Oslo and with Hans Leygraf at the Academy of Music in Hannover. Gaining his Recital Diploma in 1972, he has since been giving concerts all over Europe – Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Latvia, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Ireland – as well as overseas.

Mr. Pålsson has performed with major orchestras in Sweden and elsewhere, co-operating with conductors Rafael Frübeck de Burgos, Evgenij Svetlanov, Sixten Ehrling, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Okku Kamu, Neeme Järvi, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Paavo Berglund, among others.

In 1972 Mr. Pålsson won the Nordic Music Competition, a prize followed by a series of awards; among others the Swedish Phonogram Award in 1987, and, in 1997, the prestigious Royal Medal ”Litteris et Artibus” in recognition of his eminent skills in the artistic field.

Since 1979 he is head of the piano department at the Malmö Academy of Music (Lund University), holding a professorship since 1987. Current engagements include teaching master classes (the Music Academies of Frankfurt, Bremen, Stockholm, Göteborg, Helsingfors’ Sibelius Academy, Riga, Århus), and serving on the jury panels of numerous piano competitions. A number of his former students have been prize-winners in international piano competitions in Europe and the U.S.

Prof. Pålsson has released about 25 CD’s and has recorded piano works by some 60 composers, 25 of them Swedish. Over the years, he has had over 60 solo works and piano concerts dedicated to him. In addition, he has broadcast a number of programmes for the SVT (Swedish Television), among them the widely appreciated series "I döda mästares sällskap (In the Company of Dead Masters)", so far consisting of 30 parts.

Prof. Pålsson is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
