MATS RONDIN – violoncello, chamber music
Mats Rondin is doubtless one of the foremost cellists of his generation, in Sweden as well as internationally. He is talented with an intense and highly sophisticated musicality, combining brilliant technique with impeccable taste. His repertoire is unusually broad, ranging from Bach to contemporary avant-guard music, and he makes it all sound so very natural, at the same time elegant and unaffected .
Mats Rondin (b. 1960) began playing the violoncello at the age of seven. He studied with Gunnar Norrby at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and with Erling Bløndal Bengtsson and Frans Helmersson at Edsberg Music Institute, gaining his soloists diploma in 1981. He was rewarded a major scholarship from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in Stockholm which enabled him to continue his studies with William Pleeth in London. He has also studied with Ralph Kirshbaum and Mstislav Rostropovitj. He made his debut at the early age of sixteen, playing the solo part in Tchaikovsky´s ”Variations on a Rococo Theme”. Over the years Mr. Rondin has performed with all the symphony orchestras of Sweden, and with the most prominent orchestras of Denmark, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Norway, Iceland, Italy and Holland (Concertgebouw).
Mats Rondin is a passionate chamber musician and has performed with various music groups (duo/trio...), touring in Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Russia, Norway, Denmark, Poland, Finland, Czechoslovakia and Holland. On several occasions he has performed on radio and television, including the inauguration concert of the new Concert Hall in Malmö, broadcast live by SVT (Swedish Television).
In 1982 Mr. Rondin was awarded the Aulin scholarship by the Stockholm Concert Hall Foundation, and the following year he participated in the International Rostrum of Young Performers in Bratislava, being one of twelve carefully selected artists from all over Europe. In 1984 he was chosen "Artist of the Year" for the 1985/86 concert season by Rikskonserter (Concerts Sweden) and the Association of Swedish Orchestras, resulting in a number of performances.
In 1982 Mats Rondin was appointed solo cellist with Malmö Symphony Orchestra and had the same position with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra 1985-96. He has made several recordings of classical and modern music.
In 2005 Mats Rondin was appointed professor in violoncello at the Malmö Academy of Music (Lund university).
Prof. Rondin is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
