Students can choose to study to become music teachers in primary schools (G–student) or music ensemble and instrumental teachers (IE student). The IE-teacher is a part of the teacher training program for instrumentalists and singers. There are six different programs for IE-students, arranging/composition, classical music, pop/rock music, jazz music, folk music and eurhytmics. The IE-program is designed for students who desire to become music teachers in music schools, culture schools, gymnasium and folkhögskolor and other music schools outside the primary school.
The goal of the program is to provide students with the competency and skills necessary to teach music at the primary or secondary school level or within any other type of musical program. The Academy emphasizes the development of each student’s individual skills and talents by utilizing his or her special abilities. In general, the Malmö Academy of Music strives to provide its students with the tools needed to succeed as a music teacher. The program is a complete teacher’s education. That is why teaching skills and practical teaching experience are an integrated part of the program during the 4.5 years of study.
Students participate in determining both the course of study and curriculum. Besides the mandatory courses, students may choose between a wide variety of elective courses to suit their individual needs and preferences. The program has three main subject areas: music studies (i.e. ensemble playing, main instrument, theory, ear-training, music history,), teaching methodology, and practical teaching experience.
A number of distinguished guest teachers from many different countries are a central part of the studies at the Academy. Each year, students and faculty together determine the guest teacher who will participate in the program.
Students have a great amount of flexibility to determine their particular field of specialization.
All music students take their basic classes together, i.e. rock, pop, jazz, classical and folk music students take the same conducting, choir and music history classes. Each program has its own specialized course of study.
Classes within the program are given in a variety of forms such as private lessons, group lessons, seminars, lecturers, projects, thematic studies and individual study.
The program requires attendance and active participation in all courses. Different methods of examination are used for different courses. Each course is graded on a pass/fail basis. Students must pass all courses to complete the program. Any student who fails a course may appeal the teacher’s decision.
Every term has courses in ensemble, main instrument, and different practical teaching elements – starting with the teaching of children then on up to adults and from individuals to groups.
Students seeking admission to the program must display a high level of technical instrumental or singing proficiency. Applicants must also be demonstrate the ability to:
• play a piece of music on the piano, guitar or accordion;
• sing a song (you may choose to be accompanied);
• sing a song accompanying yourself on your primary accompaniment instrument;
• sing and sight read sheet music;
• display your musical knowledge and proficiency in 3 different activities of your own choice;
• arrange music by composing a harmony and bass line to a selected melody, compose a melody to selected lyrics or complete a melody line;
• transcribe music played from a CD;
• apply music theory.
The program grants students a teaching degree after 4.5 years of full-time study.
270 ECTS are required for graduation.
