A wonderful bunch of international and Swedish students up to be congratulated by Carin-Jarl Sunesson, program coordinators and teachers. And of course to forage on grilled sausages, falafel and potato-salad! The bar was well frequented and many stayed until late that evening, perhaps because we sat indoor this year and could keep warm longer. Many thanks especially to Cecilia, Johanna, Lotta and Tina, and our two wonderful grillmasters Liggjas and Anton! Here our students got the chance to get information about our Masters programmes, summercourses and other relvant educations. At halftime started mingle and apple-eating around posters with more detailed information about all our advanced courses. Lots of teachers showed up to answer questions from the students. Many Thanks to all who helped out with this! And yesterday it was revealed. The winning photo was taken during an excursion to Vakö myr. Photo: Albin Andersson Winner was Albin Andersson with his photo of a spider with water droplets in the net. You can see more of Albins wonderful photos at Flickr. - The competition within nature photography is intense and it is hard to make a living as a professional. So I keep on taking pictures on an amateur basis, says Albin. The happy winner together with Jep and Eva. Foto: Inger Ekström. Benjamin Forsmark was runner up with photo number 25, the flying Blue tit. Third price was given to David Wickström for his photo of Mörrumsån (no. 1). Jep Agrell hosting the award cermony. Photo: Inger Ekström. Jep Agrell handed out the prices to the three contributions that received the most votes. So what did the winners get more than the honour? Well, the Department of Biology will buy their photos for 500 kr, 750 kr and 1000 kr, respectively. Apart from the money the winner also got a beautiful frog figurine, donated by an anonymous benefactor. The anonymous donator shows the honorable first price. Photo: Inger Ekström. The photo exhibition was a wonderful initative by the student organisation BÖÖL! We hope that there will be a sequel, because this realy lit up the Ecology buildning. Tue, 17 Jan 2012 13:50:00 GMT http://www.lu.se/o.o.i.s?id=15695&news_item=7704 Biology at the Culture Night – a success again http://www.lu.se/o.o.i.s?id=15695&news_item=7244 The Culture-night (Kulturnatten) was again a huge success! With activities at the Biology show, Experimentera (the experiment tents at Sölvegatan) and the Botanical Garden. In all probably around 10.000 people visited “Naturvetarstråket”. The Biology show had a full-house every time, as always! The afternoon shows were open also for smaller kids, whereas in the evening the audience was mainly adults. In addition, when the show-crew brought out some of the animal-stars (Royal pythons) to the visitors around the experimental tents it was a great success. The most amazing performance, though, was probably by Marie Dacke, who managed do a number of afternoon Biology-shows before hurrying down to win the Science-slam, twice, in an outstanding way! And then back to the evening shows again. But she was well backed up by Låtta Skogh (from NE), Olle Lind, Therese Reber, Olle Lind, Mindaugas Mitkus and the volunteers (see below). The biology experiments included some old favourites, e.g. “Guess the shit” and “The optical pendulum”, and again the microscopes with Euglena (small, green and mobile) and spiders were popular. The “Whos skull?” was again sponsored by the Zoological museum (now sadly packing down all their wonderful things), and especially the skull of a giraffe caused some interesting guesses (“- Could it be a Triceratops?”). Some new ideas from the students were added: Fresh water aquarium (with not so red crayfish!) and Tree-of-life game on computer. The Botanical Garden opened up during the evening. From 6 pm to 9 pm the visitors could stroll in the tropical greenhouses and around in a magical garden, lit up by hundreds of lights! Also this year there was live music, this time on didgeridoo, which created a great atmosphere. Visitors could try local apple varieties and get all kinds of guidance from the staff and helping students. Great thanks to all who put so much effort into all these wonderful arrangements! Some of the events have been captured by Lena Björk Blixt and can be seen on Youtube. And here are all the volunteers who made this possible: Alexander Berg Anna Nordén Beita Gomez Caely Truong Caroline Sjöström Daniel Olofsson Elin Pettersson Emelie Ljungberg Emilia Berndtsson Jakob Engman Johan Svantesson Johanna Emgård Kim Berndt Kiril Nikolov Kristine Öritsland Våge Lisa Nilsson Louise Slot Christiansen Madeleine Nilsson Mengyi Ella Wang Nataliia Kulatska Saghar Khandan Sebastian Wasserström Thu, 06 Oct 2011 09:00:00 GMT http://www.lu.se/o.o.i.s?id=15695&news_item=7244 Biology at Lund University excellent in CHE Excellence Ranking 2010 http://www.lu.se/o.o.i.s?id=15695&news_item=5784 We offer outstanding research-strong and international programmes for both master and phd students and are placed in the excellence group at CHE Excellence Ranking 2010. The CHE Excellent ranking 2010 assign "stars" to departments that do particularly well in a number of different critera. These are e.g. publications, citations, outstandig researchers (Nobel prize winners, Fields Medalists, natural sciences only), Marie Curie programmes, offering of an Erasmus Mundus master's course, teaching staff mobility, student mobility and ERC grants. In addition, extensive evaluations from master- and PhD-students were included and here Biology at Lund University was ranked as the seventh best in Europe!
